In this course, we are going to unpack the key driving factors behind the ascent of the digital economy as well as policy challenges brought by this rapid rise. We are going to talk about how firms can build up and monetise network effects, and how platforms make their pricing and stocking decisions. We will look into the economics of search engines, the strategic design of search algorithms and search pricing. We are going to discuss the competition policy response to the rise of digital platforms and, in particular, focus on consumer data and privacy.

The target audience for this course is Graduate Students completing a PhD or MPhil in Economics, and professionals working in central banks and international institutions in research.

Choose to follow the Applied Pathway to deepen your knowledge of Applied Economy with courses in Political Economics (morning session) and Development Economics/The Economics of Digital Economy (afternoon session). Or mix and match, choosing different morning or afternoon sessions from our other Pathways: Econometrics or Macroeconomics.

To be enrolled on one of our courses, you must go through the application process.

Students have the option to select two courses if they want to: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Tuition fees are the same whether they choose to take one or two courses.

Please note we can only accept payment for the summer school via MasterCard, Visa credit card, Maestro or Visa debit card. As part of your application, you are required to pay a £50 application deposit, which will be deducted from the course payment in case of a successful application.

When you apply to our Summer School, you will have the option to select one course in the morning and one course in the afternoon. These can be from the same field, or you can mix and match to create your own tailored experience.

The Summer School will be held in person, in the Department of Economics, Oxford. For those unable to attend in person, the sessions will also be available live-streamed via Zoom.
