International entry requirements

Entry requirements for undergraduate degree courses offered by University College Birmingham are detailed for individual countries on the University website.

English language requirement for international applicants

To apply for any undergraduate degree, if your first language is not English, you will need to sit an approved test in English.

In addition to IELTS, for international applicants, University College Birmingham accepts a number of country-specific English language qualifications as evidence of English language ability. These are shown under the ‘Country Specific Information’ tab of the University website.

We also offer UCB English Proficiency Test that is complimentary to all our conditional offer holders. You will need to achieve an overall score of B2 with no less than B2- in in each component.

Applying with a UCAS tariff-based qualification

For BA/BSc offers, a student must achieve a minimum of 96-104 UCAS Tariff points from at least two A-levels or equivalent, with the exception of:

• Nursing (Adult) BSc (Hons), Primary Education Studies BA (Hons) and Finance and Accounting BSc (Hons) - students must achieve a minimum of 112 UCAS Tariff points
• Physiotherapy BSc (Hons) – students must achieve a minimum of 128 UCAS Tariff points

Applying with a work-based background

To apply, you must have a minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience, demonstrating management or supervisory duties. Your application must also include a reference from your current line manager supporting your entry to higher education.

Applying with a non-UCAS tariff-based qualification

University College Birmingham also accepts a variety of Level 3 qualifications that may not currently be included on the UCAS Tariff.

These can include a wide range of vocational Level 3 and International qualifications.

Entry requirements for FdA/FdSc programmes (Not available for international applicants)

Applying with a UCAS tariff-based qualification

For foundation degree offers, students must achieve a minimum of 56 UCAS Tariff points from at least one A-level or equivalent.

Please note, some courses have additional specific entry requirements, for example, Professional Cookery, Specialist Hair and Media Make-up and Aesthetic Practitioner. Please refer to the relevant course page on the University website.

These minimum academic entry requirements are only a guide and each application is treated on an individual basis.

Applying with a work-based background

For foundation degree offers, we also give equal consideration to applicants who are currently in work and wish to apply to the University. To apply, you must have a minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience, demonstrating management or supervisory duties. Your application must also include a reference from your current line manager supporting your entry to higher education.

UCB direct applications

UCB Direct allows prospective students who are only interested in studying at University College Birmingham to apply direct (free of charge) without having to complete lengthy and sometimes complex application forms.

UCAS applications

UK applicants wishing to apply for more than one course must apply through the UCAS website.
