This Master's provides deep knowledge about theory in conservation biology, including population dynamics in small populations and heterogeneous landscapes as well as conservation genetics. It provides insight into how habitat loss, habitat conversion and climate change affect biodiversity and how this feeds back on ecosystem services (e.g. pollination or biological control). There is an emphasis on developing a deep understanding of and critically evaluating conservation theory and tools in conservation, and on developing skills that can be of use both in practical conservation work and in research. Conservation biology professionals are needed and employed by governmental agencies, municipalities, non-governmental organisations and private consultancies. The programme also provides a solid ground for PhD studies.

MESPOM is an Erasmus+; Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management operated by four leading European and two North American universities. The students study in at least three out of six consortium universities and are awarded a joint degree upon completion. Bringing together the best from the excellent partner institutions and offering on-site insight into multiple cultures with diverse environmental regimes, MESPOM prepares students for identifying and implementing solutions to complex environmental sustainability challenges, especially in an international context. The multifaceted educational journey also creates a unique platform for the vibrant alumni network that characterises this programme.

If you are interested in questions like these, this programme is for you. The International Master’s Programme in Environmental Management and Policy (EMP) enables graduates to inspire and drive change by developing their abilities to evaluate, design and implement management and policy responses to complex environmental challenges. Distinguished key features are interdisciplinary learning, international nature and practically applied studies, with a dual focus on environmental policy and environmental management.

In this double degree programme, you spend the first year at either Universidad Carlos III de Madrid or the University of Groningen. The programme trains the next generation of analysts, researchers and professionals in the field of development and growth. It combines the expertise of three highly ranked European universities into a common platform with leading scholars in economics, economic history and demography. A hallmark of the programme is the emphasis on the personal contact between professors and students, achieved by small classes. You will, in close supervision of a highly qualified faculty member, complete two independent research projects (theses) both at the end of year 1 and year 2 of the programme.

It represents an important complement to technological and natural science approaches by focusing on the cultural dimensions of consumption and resource use and social science perspectives on the global distribution of environmental problems. This programme is unique in combining perspectives on sustainability from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It brings together lecturers and students from various backgrounds in discussions about human-environmental relations.
