Biotechnology is a key enabling technology that impacts various sectors, such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food and feed, environmental remediation, as well as the production of chemicals and biofuels. In this programme, students learn about the scientific and technological aspects of biotechnology processes, biocatalysts (enzymes and micro-organisms), gene technology, analytical tools, product recovery and process design. The graduates will acquire broad knowledge and skills for the development of efficient biocatalysts, sustainable bioprocesses for product manufacturing, wastewater treatment, and tools for analyses and medicine. The staff comprises well-established scientists with strong research and industrial networks, giving students good job prospects both locally and internationally.

This programme connects fundamental research with its applications and integrates genetics, gene technology, cell biology, molecular biology and molecular biotechnology. The common basis is within molecular genetics, which is the discipline that explains how the information in the genes is expressed and how it can give rise to various traits in an organism. Emphasis is put on genetic mechanisms underlying disease, genetic mapping, molecular genetic techniques and diagnostic methods. Training in entrepreneurship and processes of innovation and commercialisation in the molecular biotechnology field provides a fundamental base for careers in biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry.
