Enormous amounts of biological data are generated in medicine, biochemistry and biology. This creates a high demand for talented, experienced graduates from biology, statistics and computer science with knowledge in bioinformatics. In the Master’s programme in Bioinformatics at Lund University, students with different educational backgrounds come together and learn the tools to analyse biological data using computational methods. The programme is well suited for anyone who wants to work as a bioinformatician in the future or apply bioinformatics tools in their work and research.

This structured two-year programme offers you the opportunity to learn about the universe and apply your knowledge of physics in a vibrant and fast-developing area of science. The first semester is spent on core astronomy courses, including stellar structure and evolution and galactic dynamics. In the second semester, you will begin work on a 60 ECTS degree project under the supervision of internationally well-regarded professors, and this project continues over three semesters. You will also take four more courses broadening your knowledge of the most exciting areas of modern astrophysics, such as exoplanets and the early universe.

Geomatics involves the acquisition, management and analysis of phenomena with a spatial reference. The spatial analysis finds applications in many areas, such as health, environment management, natural resources assessment, urban planning, geology, archaeology and agronomy. This programme aims to provide you with knowledge in spatial analysis focusing mainly on environmental applications. Models and theories for understanding the Earth’s climate and ecosystems are integrated with knowledge for collecting environmental information using remote sensing, storing the information in databases and theories behind Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

The purpose of the Master’s programme in Mathematics is to give students advanced theoretical knowledge of mathematics together with practical skills to apply this knowledge both to mathematical problems and in applications of mathematics. A highly flexible structure that allows for individual adaptation, a diversified curriculum, a high theoretical level and an active research-oriented environment are some of the strongest features of the programme. The programme has two specialisations: Mathematics and Numerical Analysis. A vast variety of courses in all mathematical disciplines – pure and applied mathematics, numerical analysis and mathematical statistics – are available within the programme.

Our goal is to give students leading competences in biomedical research so that they are well prepared for independent work in medical research and development. The programme leads to a Master of Medical Science, with a major in Biomedicine. Teaching takes place in a research environment at the Biomedical Research Centre in Lund and all teachers are also active researchers.

The general Master’s programme in Biology gives you an opportunity to design a personal study plan. We offer a broad range of courses covering subjects from cell and molecular biology and structure and function to evolution and ecology. We have excellent facilities for laboratory work and for conducting field and indoor experiments. The education is closely connected to the scientific forefront and encourages dialogue and collaboration between students and teachers. The Master’s programme in Mathematical Statistics provides a broad spectrum of tools and methods for handling random phenomena occurring in scientific as well as industrial contexts. Within the programme, you can specialise in many different areas such as the modelling of economical, biological and environmental data. You study at least 45 credits in mathematical statistics at the Master’s level and write a Master’s thesis of 30 credits. The remaining (at most 45) credits can be used in additional mathematical statistics courses or, for example, mathematics or numerical analysis, as well as in other subjects, for example, computer science, economics, molecular biology and bioinformatics.

Cultural criminology is about local cultures, subcultures and a whole range of cultural characteristics associated with crime. It aims to explain and understand how people involved in crime go about their everyday life and how they interact with others. We want to get inside the experiences of committing or controlling crime. If you are a graffiti writer, what are the thrills? What efforts are used in trying to control graffiti, and what is the cultural understanding among media and social control agents?

This Master’s programme provides knowledge on current theories and models of aquatic ecosystems, the relation between watershed, atmosphere, lakes and streams, interactions between humankind and aquatic ecosystems, and water management. Practical training in laboratory and field methodology is also emphasised. Some of the courses contain week-long excursions where practical field studies are conducted; from hypotheses and preparations, via sampling, analysing samples and data, and finally writing a report and performing an oral presentation.

The purpose of the programme is to give you broad and fundamental knowledge in the fields of physical and theoretical chemistry and chemical physics. Students develop advanced laboratory skills, a profound theoretical comprehension of fundamental mechanisms and a good understanding of practical applications. Special emphasis is given to an unbroken line of understanding, from quantum mechanical description of atoms and molecules to complex supramolecular structures, as well as their industrial and biological applications.

This is an education for students interested in evolutionary and ecological processes at the level of genes, individuals and populations of animals. At the Department of Biology, you will meet teachers who are also researchers in our excellent scientific environment. The research areas stretch from disease resistance in natural populations, host-parasite interactions, diversification dynamics of life throughout evolutionary history, how birds and other animals have adapted to migrate and navigate, evolutionary processes that generate biodiversity, to physiological and ecological mechanisms affecting the balance between reproduction and survival. The programme provides a solid ground for PhD studies but also for employment within consultancy and the public sector.

This Master's provides deep knowledge about theory in conservation biology, including population dynamics in small populations and heterogeneous landscapes as well as conservation genetics. It provides insight into how habitat loss, habitat conversion and climate change affect biodiversity and how this feeds back on ecosystem services (e.g. pollination or biological control). There is an emphasis on developing a deep understanding of and critically evaluating conservation theory and tools in conservation, and on developing skills that can be of use both in practical conservation work and in research. Conservation biology professionals are needed and employed by governmental agencies, municipalities, non-governmental organisations and private consultancies. The programme also provides a solid ground for PhD studies.

The world will depend even more on geological expertise in the future. Concerns about global environmental change have never been greater, and as technology evolves and the world’s population increases, greater demands are placed on Earth’s limited resources. Graduates from our internationally renowned Geology programme obtain highly relevant subject-specific as well as transferable skills that are necessary for tackling some of our major societal challenges, either through academic research or through employment in private companies, governmental structures and NGOs.
