Statistics is the science of analyzing numerical data and has applications in a variety of fields. At JMU, you will get the best of both worlds: in-depth faculty-student collaborative experiences usually only found in smaller liberal arts institutions, along with the breadth and diversity of offerings of a large institution. Our faculty is committed to incorporating student projects into their research and guiding undergraduates through the processes of proposing and carrying out professional-level research projects in statistics. In addition, our conferences, clubs, and outreach programs designed specifically for undergraduates make our majors true members of our community.

The Biostatistics and Data Science (MA) program at the Medical College of Wisconsin provides a learning experience focused on solid theoretical foundation along with practical experience. Robust course offerings, active engagement in statistical consulting, and a capstone project create ample opportunities to develop essential analytical and communication skills. Consulting projects ranging from the simplest to the most complex protocols and data collection schemes allow students to get experience of working with data in the area of cancer research, cardiovascular diseases, clinical trials, genomics, big data, and machine learning. This hands-on experience will enable students to synthesize the acquired knowledge and integrate various courses they have taken. The 31-credit program can be completed in 18 months. Students will leave fully prepared to take on the challenges of careers in the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare, biomedical sciences, academics, and general data analytics.
