In this programme, you will study environmental processes, monitoring and data management on local and global scales. You will obtain knowledge of various ecosystems, climate and climate change, land forming processes and land use. You learn useful tools such as GIS, remote sensing and digital mapping for analyzing and presenting data. You also gain the perspective of human activities, exploitation of natural resources and development. You will study in an international environment and learn both theory and practice through field excursions, group work and computer labs. Our staff has extensive experience working in different environments, from the cold Arctic to North African deserts and tropical forests in Central Africa and South America.

Increasing disasters and related losses are a truly global challenge. Governments and international organisations acknowledge the necessity to increase efforts in risk management and climate change adaptation to adjust to changing environments and develop safe and sustainable societies. The programme offers a mix of practical and theoretical learning with a strong focus on group work, the interaction between students and teaching staff, as well as important actors within this field of study. It contributes to meeting the need for qualified professionals who have a broad understanding of the field and ability to apply skills and generic tools in risk assessment, capacity assessment, preparedness and contingency planning, and risk-based land use planning.

This programme enables you to gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in complex issues within the areas of environmental sciences, physical geography and climate change. You will learn methods and techniques for measurements and collecting data. You will also gather substantial experience using different tools and methods commonly used by professionals for analysis of environmental data, together with skills for presenting and communicating results and conclusions for different audiences. After successfully completing the programme, you will be an expert within a number of different fields, such as climate and water issues, nature conservation and international development, and work with issues relating to assessment, analysis, management and development of the environment and natural resources in a long-term sustainable perspective. Naturally, you could also pursue a career in research.

The Master’s programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science (LUMES) equips change agents with tools for solving sustainability challenges. The programme is taught in a unique interdisciplinary and internationally excellent educational and research environment at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS). Since the programme started in 1997, LUMES has had over 900 students from roughly 100 countries. The programme focuses on sustainability challenges from a local to the global level by combining social and natural science perspectives. Emphasis is placed on understanding present societal development patterns and the environmental problems they create, and on formulating strategies for future sustainable Pathways.
